A Shower for Your Thoughts

Yesterday I heard someone say that they did all their best thinking in the shower. Now, that would be fine if it weren’t simultaneously said with a tone indicating that the person saying it thought they were the most idiosyncratic individual since Andy Kaufman and the 8 billionth time someone has said something along those lines.

And so I ask this: does anyone NOT do their best thinking in the shower? Can we all agree that this at least very common?

My best thinking starts at midnight and till I accidentally fall asleep. It’s just that in the shower I have still routine problems to solve this day, but when I get to sleep my mind elaborates…

Well, so far I’m not Apple or 37signals so my model may not be really productive :)

When I’m in the shower, all I do is worry about things I have to do or things that I’ve forgotten but that I can’t do anything about at the moment.

I do my best thinking when I’m reading things other people have written, or going out for a walk. I need external stimuli to trigger truly useful and creative thought—otherwise all I do is mull over my anxieties.

That’s why my ADD self hates showering: no stimuli, too boring.
